Jordan Mendoza

Jordan is a figurative sculptor who creates small to large-scale pieces in bronze. His works are explorations of various expressions of the human form. He is fascinated with the process of capturing aspects of the inner world and giving them physical shape and presence through the dynamism and exquisite expressiveness of the human body. His works powerfully convey emotion, aspiration, and sensuality. Dance and a study of movement are common themes of his work.

The son of prominent bronze artist, Jose Mendoza, Jordan was immersed in the creative world all his life. His father’s studio was his playground: clay, scrapers, wax, and wire armatures were his playthings; the members of his father’s staff, his playmates. In his late teens, he was apprenticing and assisting his father in several major projects – the Trinitarian Cross in Cebu, the Lady Justice in Fort Bonifacio, and the Monument of the Founders of Unilab to name a few. Not surprisingly, he had his first one man show at the age of 20, and his first major commission at the age of 25. This was a 12-ft cast bronze sculpture of Christ on the Cross for the St. Vincent’s Parish in Tandang Sora.

Under the tutelage of his father, he acquired not only the skill, craft, and artistry, but also the love for the process of bronze casting itself – the painstaking care that goes to every step of transformation from clay to bronze. For both father and son, they themselves are the casters of their work. In this intricate and laborious way of making art—often outsourced to suppliers of foundry services—no step is too small; each phase an opportunity to engage intimately with the work. The material process itself is considered an integral part of the finished piece.
